“We shall not be in our prime before fifty.” -Elizabeth Cady Stanton, 1857

“We shall not be in our prime before fifty, and after that we shall be good for twenty years at least,” Elizabeth Cady Stanton told Susan B. Anthony in 1857. She was 41 at the time (not yet in her prime) and she would continue her work as a woman’s rights activist until well into her eighties.

Happy birthday to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a woman who knew how to appreciate a birthday. She was born on November 12, 1815.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton is one of the suffragists featured in the first Ask a Suffragist book, Stories and Wisdom from America’s First Feminists, launching in Spring 2019.
